چکیده

Real-world visual data is often corrupted and requires the use of estimation techniques that are robust to noise and outliers. Robust methods are well studied for Euclidean spaces and their use has also been extended to Riemannian spaces. In this chapter, we present the necessary mathematical constructs for Grassmann manifolds, followed by two different algorithms that can perform robust estimation on them. In the first one, we describe a nonlinear mean shift algorithm for finding modes of the underlying kernel density estimate (KDE). In the second one, a user-independent robust regression algorithm, the generalized projection based M-estimator (gpbM) is detailed. We show that the gpbM estimates are significantly improved if KDE optimization over the Grassmann manifold is also included. The results for a few real-world computer vision problems are shown to demonstrate the importance of performing robust estimation using Grassmann manifolds.

Conjugate gradient on Grassmann manifolds for robust subspace estimation

a r t i c l e i n f o Most geometric computer vision problems involve orthogonality constraints. An important subclass of these problems is subspace estimation, which can be equivalently formulated into an optimization problem on Grassmann manifolds. In this paper, we propose to use the conjugate gradient algorithm on Grassmann man-ifolds for robust subspace estimation in conjunction with the r...

Advances in matrix manifolds for computer vision

This paper presents an overview of various matrix manifolds that are commonly used in computer vision applications. It covers the following manifoldsLie groups, Stiefel manifolds, Grassmann manifolds and Riemannian manifolds. A manifold of dimension n is a topological space that near each point resembles n-dimensional Euclidean space. More precisely, each point of an n-dimensional manifold has ...

Localized LRR on Grassmann Manifolds: An Extrinsic View

Subspace data representation has recently become a common practice in many computer vision tasks. It demands generalizing classical machine learning algorithms for subspace data. Low-Rank Representation (LRR) is one of the most successful models for clustering vectorial data according to their subspace structures. This paper explores the possibility of extending LRR for subspace data on Grassma...

Recognition of Humans and their Activities using Statistical analysis on Stiefel and Grassmann Manifolds

Many applications in computer vision involve learning and recognition of patterns from exemplars which lie on certain manifolds. Given a database of examples and a query, the following two questions are usually addressed – a) what is the ‘closest’ example to the query in the database ? b) what is the ‘most probable’ class to which the query belongs ? The answer to the first question involves st...

Mean Polynomial Kernel and Its Application to Vector Sequence Recognition

SUMMARY Classification tasks in computer vision and brain-computer interface research have presented several applications such as biometrics and cognitive training. However, like in any other discipline, determining suitable representation of data has been challenging, and recent approaches have deviated from the familiar form of one vector for each data sample. This paper considers a kernel be...
